The Gaston Footsteps website is an initiative of Gaston Together’s Gaston Vision 2020 (GV2020) Greenways Team. The Greenways Team is composed of community volunteers, county/municipal planners, Parks & Rec, Health Department and Cooperative Extension staff along with representatives of the Carolina Thread Trail.
Based on data from the 15-county Carolina Thread Trail, Gaston County has more developed greenways/trails miles than any other county in that network. In addition, Gaston County is unique in having a blueway for those interested in Kayaking and canoeing. With all of these wonderful resources for outdoor adventure, the Team decided it would be very worthwhile to develop a way to showcase these assets to our local citizens as well as outdoor enthusiasts who may want to visit our county. Thus the Gaston Footsteps website was developed.
Thanks to generous funding from the Carrie E. and Lena V. Glenn Foundation, the website design was created. We were fortunate to also enlist in-kind GIS mapping services from the Gaston County government.
The GV2020 Greenways Team was formed in 2006 to create a county-wide effort to foster interest and support for greenway development in our community. In 2007, Gaston County was selected by the Catawba Lands Conservancy as one of the two pilot counties (along with York County, SC) for the Carolina Thread Trail mapping process.
